"Architecture Elective" A elective on how
architecture affects us and how we have the power to affect it. We studied the subject and decided on a course to effect the Architectural environment of the student locker area. We started constructing a system of panels (flats) that would later be used for the schools drama set. Students were exuberant about making
something real, something that would endure. Many had never hammered a nail, used sand paper, touched a paint brush much less operate a drill or screw gun. Small 7th and 8th
graders were thrilled when they discovered they could pick up and carry the
light weight 4’x8’ panels. The class was concluded by the quick assembly of a
Display System and walk in Camera Obscura. The Student Commons was transformed
and a new age began for electives at Springfield International School.

"Theater Design Elective"
An elective on theater and its related architectural requirements. Students finished the construction of "flats", assembled, puddied, sanded, and painted them. We (students and I, not tukang) wired a light tray and suspended it from the gyms structure, built and wired a metal chandelier and hung that. We built and hung doors and did receive help from staff to install the sets ceiling and 28 foot support beam. The “Back Stage Pass” team pho-painted the door panels, made paintings with frames and constructed a set fire place. The whole school was amazed at the installation and it continues to evolve and serve multiple in forms.
